MEDIA RELEASE: Paper Plus and Mighty Ape Kowtow to Cancel Culture

Media Release 8 May 2021
Family First NZ says that book retailers are kowtowing to gender activists rather than allowing a debate on the best response of how to treat people who experience gender dysphoria.

Paper Plus and Mighty Ape have withdrawn two books on the transgender issue because of a couple of complaints.

But as the author of one of the books “When Harry Became Sally” says, “Gender dysphoria is listen in the APA’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders” which sellers such as Amazon sell. “So the real deciding factor seems to be whether you endorse hormones and surgery as the proper treatment or counselling.”

Paper Plus, Mighty Ape and Stuff who promoted the story labelling them “transphobic” obviously haven’t done any research, and appear to have never read the book – and neither has the gender ‘expert’ that Syff quotes. Ryan Anderson says “Please quote the passage where I call them mentally ill. You can’t quote that passage because it doesn’t exist.”

The author says that “everyone agrees that gender dysphoria is a serious condition that causes great suffering. There is a debate, however, which Amazon [and other book sellers] is seeking to shut down, about how best to treat patients who experience gender dysphoria.”

Family First has previously interviewed the author of “When Harry Became Sally”. Drawing on the best insights from biology, psychology, and philosophy, the book offers a balanced approach, and a sober and honest survey of the human costs of getting human nature wrong.

It’s disappointing that Paper Plus and Mighty Ape are so weak-kneed that they will fold so quickly rather than allowing a robust debate which is desperately needed about how to respond to this issue.
