Washington state has passed a bill banning the word “marijuana” from state laws and documents, claiming the word is pejorative and racist. That’s right, marijuana is supposedly a racist term that’s rooted in white supremacist culture. Wow, we’d better update our Say Nope to Dope website then 😉
Rather than working to reduce cannabis consumption (along with its associated harms), Washington State instead prioritises Critical Race Theory.
Washington State Representative Melanie Morgan said that the term is “pejorative” (meaning inflammatory and defamatory) because it was once “negatively associated with Mexican immigrants.” The lawmaker has previously alleged that the lack of diversity in the marijuana industry is due to “white supremacist culture.”
Morgan goes on to say:
“As recreational marijuana use became more popular, it was negatively associated with Mexican immigrants,” Morgan added. “Even though it seems simple because it’s just one word, the reality is we’re healing the wrongs that were committed against Black and Brown people around cannabis.”
This all sounds like a clever way to avoid the real issues i.e. the harms caused by marijuana (aka weed, cannabis, dope etc.) and other recreational drugs.
