McBlog: Cancel Culture Booming in Canada / Australia

We highlight two disturbing recent cases of cancel culture – but it’s the cancelling of the expression of Christianity and any biblical viewpoints. One in Canada (no surprises) where a worship leader is being cancelled, and churches are being fined for daring to host him – yes, a worship leader – and then to Australia where a doctor in Victoria (no surprise either) has lost his career – not for any clinical failing or complains from a patient, but for expressing his deeply held views on social media.

Cancel Culture Booming in Canada & Australia

I want to highlight two disturbing cases of cancel culture – but it’s cancelling of the expression of Christianity and any biblical viewpoints.

According to an article in the Christian Post

Canadian church slapped with $2,500 fine for hosting pro-Trump worship leader Sean Feucht

A church in Montreal, Quebec, has been slapped with a $2,500 fine for hosting a church service featuring activist missionary and worship leader Sean Feucht, whose views on sexuality, gender and President Donald Trump have drawn the ire of authorities in multiple Canadian cities.

Ministerios Restauración Church, a Spanish-speaking congregation in Montreal’s Plateau-Mont-Royal borough, was fined because they allowed Feucht to conduct a worship service last Friday without a permit, according to the National Post.

The stop in Montreal was part of the “Revive in 25” tour being led by Feucht, an outspoken Trump supporter who has denounced abortion, transgender ideology and homosexuality.

…Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante’s office suggested they issued the punishment to the church because it hosted the event despite objections from the city government regarding Feucht’s opinions.

“This show runs counter to the values of inclusion, solidarity, and respect that are championed in Montreal,” a spokesperson for the mayor said… “Freedom of expression is one of our fundamental values, but hateful and discriminatory speech is not acceptable in Montreal.”

Often citing “public safety concerns,” at least six Canadian cities have cancelled Feucht’s tour stops… according to CTV News.

Let’s check out the media coverage – and listen carefully to the labelling

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqJkxPaR69Q

Much of the mainstream Canadian press has angled their stories about the incident against Feucht, labeling him “MAGA-affiliated.”

In response, he tweeted

Let me get this right Montréal: 1) You cancelled our permit for a peaceful outdoor worship gather for no reason. 2) You threatened a CHURCH on private property to not have church. 3) You send a battalion of police to intimidate us. 4) Antifa throws 2 smoke bombs at my head inside the church – you do nothing! 5) Now you want fine the church for doing what the church does – WORSHIP. Every Canadian should be embarrassed/concerned with this. No bigger scandal in Canada.

Sounds just like Posie Parker at Albert Park doesn’t it. Activist policing – or lack of policing.

He first rose to prominence for launching his “Let Us Worship” movement in protest of government church lockdowns.

He also tweeted this response

“Here’s the hard truth: If I had shown up with purple hair and a dress, claiming to be a woman, the government wouldn’t have said a word. But to publicly profess deeply held Christian beliefs is to be labelled an extremist — and to have a free worship event classified as a public safety risk.

“The Let Us Worship movement was born as an organic response to authoritarian COVID-19 lockdown policies — policies that, in Canada, were among the most oppressive in the world. The pandemic may be over, but the anti-Christian bias remains.”

He also tweeted

“I’ve led worship and preached in Africa, the Middle East and all across the world in 2025. The most intense persecution was not in Iraq or Turkey — but CANADA! Didn’t have that on my bingo card.”

But this was my favourite response by him

It showed activists walking around completely naked at a pride parade on the streets of Toronto – adults – in front of children. All good, according to Canadian authorities

Has there been push-back by others against this overreach by the Canadian state?

According to this article

Réseau évangélique du Québec, a religious group that represents approximately 500 Evangelical Protestant churches in the province, condemned the municipal government’s actions and suggested government-sanctioned censorship is more concerning than Feucht’s potentially offensive opinions.

“While the criticism of ideas is legitimate in a democracy, state censorship of those ideas represents a dangerous deviation,” the group’s spokesperson told The Canadian Press.

I decided to check some of the legacy media coverage to see if I was missing something here – but what I found was that I could probably be treated the same way.

Who is Sean Feucht and why is he controversial?

Here’s what to know about far-right Christian nationalist Sean Feucht ahead of his scheduled B.C. stops next month.

This is going to be an unbiased article – NOT!

He formerly led worship at the charismatic Bethel Church in Redding, Calif. and has released a number of worship albums. He has espoused many of Donald Trump’s MAGA ideologies and aligns with Christian nationalist views.

… To date, at least six cities and venues have revoked permits for Feucht’s shows or outright cancelled the events due to concerns over public safety and anti-LGBTQ views held by Feucht, along with his history of other controversies.

So it’s nothing to do with “public safety” – it’s to do with his views of radical sexuality and gender identity – and hurty feelings to poor wee Canadians.

But the article continues to outline why he’s Public Enemy #1 in woke Canada.

Mass gatherings during COVID-19: During the height of the pandemic when health officials advised against large events, Feucht hosted mass gatherings across the U.S. under the guise of being worship gatherings.

So not even in Canada.

Feucht claimed the events were to protest lockdown restrictions, which he felt were oppressive to Christians, while critics pointed out the events flew in the face of public health advice and could be super-spreader events.

Now remember that Anthony Fauci later admitted there was little to no evidence behind the social distancing recommendation.

Polarizing views on the Black Lives Matter movement: While Feucht has said he believes Black lives matter, he has publicly called the BLM movement “shady” and a “fraud,” and that “we can’t let our God-given empathy get hijacked by a dark movement with hidden agendas.”

Anti-LGBTQ views: In 2022, Feucht was among those who led anti-LGBTQ protests in Southern California in response to Disney’s opposition of Florida’s Don’t Say Gay law.

Well, it wasn’t a “don’t say gay” bill. That’s a media lie. It was about protecting children from age-inappropriate LGBT indoctrination.

In 2023, he also posted online that “the LGBTQ+ mafia is a cult bent on perverting and destroying the innocence of every child they can.” He also previous posted online that Pride Month “is the month you discover which people, businesses, influencers, corporations & ministries have sold their soul to a demonic agenda seeking to destroy our culture and pervert our children.”

Sounds like our website WokeUp.nz which is very popular in New Zealand.

Failed congressional campaign and anti-abortion views: In 2020, Feucht ran unsuccessfully under the Republican party for California’s 3rd congressional district, on a platform that included anti-abortion views. During a campaign rally, Feucht criticized “leaders who feverishly promote the slaughter of the unborn and the newborn.”

Fair enough.

Proud Boys security detail: At a 2021 gathering, Feucht shared a photo of his supposed security detail, noting that they included “ex-military, ex-police, private security & most importantly LOVERS OF JESUS & freedom.” Some of the individuals identified in the group photo have been associated with the far-right Proud Boys extremist group and the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Some. Associated.

Clutching at straws, it seems.

In this CBC article (which is the equivalent of Radio NZ – state funded leftist material)

The 41-year-old preacher and activist has raised the ire of people for his support of U.S. President Donald Trump and his Make America Great Again, or MAGA, movement, and over comments he’s made about abortion, critical race theory, 2SLGBTQ+ rights and gender diversity.

Golly they really are precious in Canada, aren’t they.

But this article from the Western Standard by Nigel Hannaford entitled Canada shall be saved? Sorry Sean, you might be a bit late is a very good analysis.

According to my friend and colleague Chris Oldcorn: “Residents say Feucht’s outspoken opposition to abortion rights, 2SLGBTQ+ equality, and critical race theory — as well as his ties to the Make America Great Again movement — clash with Parks Canada’s pledge to create safe, inclusive spaces.”

The concert was going to be held at a public park – a historical site.

So far, I like him. But seriously, this is about the Liberal Party’s vision of the “good Canadian.”

Consider:

  • Opposed to abortion? You can’t run for the Liberal Party unless you affirm a woman’s right to choose—in writing.
  • Question sexual identity? Trudeau declared, “If a man says he’s a woman, he’s a woman.”
  • Skeptical of critical race theory? Trudeau took a knee in theatrical solidarity with the now-discredited Black Lives Matter movement.

Thing is, it’s not just the wandering Christian troubador Feucht who questions these ideas.

So do millions of Canadians — some of them Liberal voters. (All Liberals are not woke.)

The only cloud I could find over Sean is an article from MinistryWatch where five former leaders of groups associated with Sean Feucht have issued a formal statement bringing to light what they call “longstanding and serious moral, ethical, financial, organisational and governance failures” by Feucht and calling for an independent investigation into possible fraud and embezzlement.

But in that same article they highlight that in 2024, Feucht was joined by Eric Metaxas and Pastor Russell Johnson at a pro-Israel rally at Columbia University in response to pro-Palestinian protestors. And in 2021, his Light a Candle Project raised more than $200,000 for an Afghan Emergency Relief Fund to “meet the needs of the persecuted church in Afghanistan,” even though the group had no experience in the country and provided no concrete plans.

Once again, all claims. I’m happy to see quantified and verifiable problems – if there are any.

But that’s not actually Canada’s business.

But this isn’t the first time churches and church leaders have come under fire in Canada.

Over 85 churches were targeted after the mass grave hoax in 2021. There were allegations that mass graves of indigenous children were discovered at Catholic residential schools. The appalling former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the church vandalism at the time as “unacceptable and wrong,” but also suggested they were “understandable” in the wake of allegations. Later excavations found no evidence of human remains at the sites.

Canadian Pastor Tim Stephens was jailed in 2021 after a Calgary police helicopter found his congregation gathering outdoors.

Now, just to show how wacky things are, and that this is not necessarily about hurty feelings and political incorrect views, but that it’s about shutting down the promotion of Scriptural Truth and Christianity in general, check this out

According to this report

While legacy media and progressive politicians have loudly condemned Christian musician Sean Feucht for his Biblical beliefs on gender and sexuality as he tours Canada, establishment figures have been completely silent about the Canadian tour of a Salafi preacher who touts an extreme anti-Western ideology to his followers.

Imam Ustadh Abu Tamiyyah will begin a national tour on July 31 with support from Islamic Relief Canada, whose parent organization has been accused of alleged links to terrorism.

Abu Tamiyyah preaches a fundamentalist Salafi interpretation of Islam that promotes Sharia, demonizes Western ideals and Christianity. The radical imam’s “End of Times” tour will hit major cities including Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Vancouver and elsewhere.

And just over the weekend, this happened in Vancouver

Dave Diewert, director of Samidoun, a listed terrorist organization in Canada, gathered in a Vancouver Park on Tuesday to glorify martyrdom. But @seanfeucht can’t get a permit to sing Jesus Loves Me?

Canada is in a dark place on religious freedom.

But before we point the finger at Canada, let’s go to Australia…

In a summary by the Human Rights Law Alliance entitled Online satire can now cost you your medical career (and the head of the HRLA John Steenhof spoke at our conference two years ago)

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) has found Christian GP and HRLA client Dr Jereth Kok guilty of professional misconduct – not for any clinical failing, but for expressing his deeply held views on social media.

Over a 12-year period, Dr Kok shared posts critical of abortion, gender ideology, and COVID-19 policies.

The Tribunal found 54 of these 85 posts to be misconduct under the National Law, despite their political, religious, and satirical nature – and despite lacking any connection to or impact on patient care.

VCAT found that Dr Kok’s posts, among other things, were “disrespectful” and “derogatory”, not sufficiently balanced or unbiased, and legitimised Covid vaccine hesitancy.

The decision is deeply disappointing for Dr Kok and sets a concerning precedent for freedom of speech in Australia, particularly for professionals who hold Christian or conservative beliefs.

It confirms that regulators like AHPRA and the Medical Board have significant powers to discipline practitioners not only for what they do in their clinical practice, but for holding and expressing unpopular social or moral views – even in a private capacity.

The Tribunal considered but gave little weight to constitutional or freedom of speech protections.

One of the posts found to be misconduct was a satirical Babylon Bee article that made fun of the use of gender pronouns, which VCAT said showed a lack of respect for “gender diversity”.

According to Tribunal:

The post was disrespectful and derogatory to LGBTQI+ community as it was making fun of LGBTQI+ people as members of a group …

Another offending post was an article written by Dr Kok addressing transgender ideology from a Christian perspective, which the Tribunal found to be “denigrating, demeaning, disrespectful and derogatory to LGBTQI+ persons”.

The worst allegations were not upheld, and over a third of the posts were not found to be misconduct. The Tribunal recognised the use of satire or sarcasm in a number of posts and that others contained genuine religious or political commentary.

However, as in the two examples above, many of these posts were found to breach the National Law.

This is a deeply concerning shift in regulatory scope over personal speech.

The VCAT decision in Medical Board of Australia v Dr Jereth Kok signals a concerning expansion of regulatory power into areas of personal belief, political expression and religious conviction.

For Christian professionals – and indeed for any professional who holds views outside the progressive mainstream – the implications are serious.

This decision is disappointing to Dr Kok, who was suspended over six years ago and has lost his career. But the ramifications extend much further to all Australians, particularly those who work in a regulated profession. The decision raises concerns about whether Australia will continue to allow employers, regulators, and government to exercise power over free speech and the expression of personal, political, and religious opinions.

They’re now considering an appeal – and I hope they do.

The Australia Christian Lobby put out a statement and in it they said about Jereth’s opposition to the conversion therapy law:

The case has an ACL connection. In 2020, Jereth shared an ACL open letter to Dan Andrews protesting the Victorian laws that Jereth said would criminalise parents who try to stop their children being sent away for bodily disfigurement. The Tribunal found this was denigrating, demeaning, disrespectful and derogatory to LGBTQI+ persons.

As you can see, Family First and I would be toast in both Canada and in Victoria.

There’s just too many whacko governmental groups there to handle big people & adult debates – and even disagreement.

Too much hurty feelings.

The water in Victoria and Canada must make everyone very sensitive and tearful.

But it was the extent to which the Victorian gestapo went to bring down Dr Jereth Kok that should really shock people.

George Christensen at DailyDeclaration.org.au writes

What began as anonymous complaints triggered a years-long, taxpayer-funded witch hunt to comb through over a decade of his online religious and political commentary, ultimately branding him “unfit to practise” for holding and sharing Christian beliefs.

… the witch hunt began years ago.

AHPRA Ordered Facebook to Hand Over 5 Years’ Worth of Kok’s Activity

On 5 August 2019, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) sent a formal demand to Facebook’s Sydney office. The letter required Facebook to produce:

  • Every post and comment ever made by Dr Kok
  • Comments made under his posts by other users
  • Deleted and archived content
  • Evidence of any community standards violations
  • Details of any warnings or bans
  • The dates, times, and content of every interaction

This wasn’t a narrow review. It was a blanket data trawl from 2014 to 2019, a five-year dragnet to scrutinise his private thoughts, satire, and Christian commentary.

And this was all done without a single complaint from a patient. Not one.

Facebook Pushed Back and Refused to Comply

…Even Big Tech saw this for what it was: government overreach on a global scale.

AHPRA Outsourced Surveillance to Private Forensic Investigators

Undeterred by Facebook’s refusal, AHPRA went nuclear.

They hired Ferrier Hodgson, a private forensic firm, and commissioned them to scour not only Facebook, but also websites and blogs, where Dr Kok had posted comments over the years. The result:

  • 239 web pages crawled
  • 122 pages identified with Kok’s name
  • Sophisticated “scrolling” software deployed to uncover hidden and de-ranked comments
  • Facebook’s own privacy settings bypassed using test accounts

…This was not standard medical oversight but, rather, a government-ordered deep-dive into a man’s personal and political life.

Guilt by Association: The Muehlenberg Connection

AHPRA specifically targeted comments made by Dr Kok on Bill Muehlenberg’s website and Facebook page. Why? Because Muehlenberg is a well-known conservative Christian commentator who publicly opposes abortion and gender ideology.

So this is like somebody commenting on Family First material and McBlogs etc.

Yes – you’re being watched!

AHPRA didn’t only go after Kok’s own writings. They targeted his associations, his networks, his interactions with others in the Christian conservative space.

Read that again.

They investigated a doctor’s licence because of comments made on someone else’s blog.

….it was triggered by anonymous complaints over social media commentary.

They weren’t protecting patients. They were punishing dissent.

The Precedent Is Chilling

If this can happen to Dr Kok, it can happen to any Christian, any conservative, any professional who holds a licence or registration with a government body.

Let me spell it out:

  • If you post on Facebook about abortion being wrong, they can investigate.
  • If you comment on a friend’s page about gender ideology, they can subpoena it.
  • If you question a public health order, you might face a panel.
  • And if you share satire, post Scripture, or defend biblical truth, they’ll call it misconduct.

This is not hypothetical. This is now documented reality with the case of Dr Kok.

  • No patient was harmed.
  • No clinical error was made.
  • And yet this man has been banned from practising for six years. With more to come.

The State Wants to Scare You Silent

This wasn’t just about Dr Kok. It was about sending a message.

Keep your Christianity quiet.

Keep your thoughts to yourself.

Toe the line or lose your livelihood.

Well, we’ve seen the line.

We’ve seen the lengths they’ll go to.

And now, we must fight.

I’m not sure who said it but it’s true

“If you leave your children a world where you never stood up, they’ll inherit a world where they can’t.”

It’s time to get some backbone, team.

I’ve been cancelled.

It’s alright. It’s like going through puberty. You’re dead scared of it, but once it happens, it’s awesome.

You’ll survive. I did.

It’s time to fight this utter madness.
