But today I just want to show you three short excerpts that to me really spoke volumes about the integrity and boldness that Israel & Maria had, and it shows a side of them that the media didn’t want you to see. A testimony to how they survived a torrid period in their life and marriage.
As we explain in the introduction to our interview with Israel & Maria Folau, we’ve always wanted to interview them – to hear their side of the story, to find out how they coped through a tumultuous period, and what effect it had on their faith, and on their marriage & family. It’s never been fully told – and we’ve only ever received the media narrative.
Israel and Maria graciously agreed to our request and so in July, I sat down with both of them at their home in Brisbane. An exclusive interview with Family First New Zealand to be shared at our annual Forum on the Family.

But there were three key parts that I just want to show you
Obviously there was huge focus on the word “hell” and that infamous image that Izzy posted. And I asked him about that – and what was his motivation
One reason that I have always had massive respect for Izzy and Maria is that I felt many Christians ran for cover during the whole affair. The backlash was so strong and ferile – especially from the media – that many of us avoided speaking up.
And many of Izzy’s teammates also remained silent – but Izzy was gracious to them and didn’t want to force the issue.
But it was Maria’s response that led her to understanding just what God was asking them to do – and be
And finally, amidst all the turmoil, and personal threats that they were receiving, and the paparazzi outside their home, Maria had an amazing encounter – and remember that she was relatively new in the faith. But this event spoke to her significantly
