Good news from Monaco, the small principality on the French Riviera, famous for Formula One, James Bond, Casinos, and expensive boats!
The good news is that the ruler of the microstate, Prince Albert II, has declined to legalise abortion. Legislators had presented the Prince with a proposed law, but he has stated he will not sign it. He appealed to the principalities of Christian/Catholic history, stating (in French), “I believe the current system expresses who we are, considering the role of the Catholic religion in our country, while ensuring safe and humane support.”
The clarification follows a legislative initiative introduced in March 2025, when National Council members submitted a bill seeking to authorize abortion under defined conditions. The Minister of State Christophe Mirmand informed Council President Thomas Brezzo two weeks ago that the government would not continue the legislative process.
It is encouraging to see a political leader standing up clearly and firmly for life, and this is to be applauded. As readers might expect, there is no reporting of this situation here in New Zealand, which is why we here at Family First are pleased to share the news with you.
Strictly, Monaco has decriminalised abortion, but it remains illegal except for situations such as rape or danger to the mother’s life. In practice, those seeking abortion will head over the border into France.
Regardless of current practice and choices by Monegasque (residents of Monaco), Family First commends the Prince for his principled stand.
