FAMILY MATTERS: Effective conversations about the harms of porn

In 2017, the Ministry of Health acknowledged that “the content of pornography has changed significantly over the last 20 years and has become more extreme, deviant and violent” and that “violence towards women and girls is depicted in 80% of online content. This has a variety of harmful impacts on children and young people’s sexual expectations, attitudes, and behaviour.” But the problem of porn and the harms of porn continue – especially with our young people. And the concerns of parents also continue. The good news is that there’s a new programme which is looking to educate both young people but also parents and church leaders as to the harms of pornography and our response. Brett Harvey is the founder of Taima Korero Charitable Trust which aims to lead effective conversations about pornography, and provide support, tools and resources for whanau seeking to mitigate the harmful effects of porn. He shares his personal story which led to his vision to establish this important ministry.
