On this episode of Family Matters, Simon interviews UK theologian and former Cliff College lecturer Dr. Aaron Edwards, a husband and father of seven, about being suspended and fired after a February 2023 tweet pointing out the church was losing its way around matters of sexuality. You read this right – a Christian theologian was sacked from a Christian college because he drew attention to what Gospel says.
Aaron says evangelical churches and institutions became submissive during Covid, avoided speaking on moral and social issues, and then adopted fashionable causes like critical race theory, while sidelining biblical teaching. He describes the rapid “Twitter storm” he faced, his college publicly denouncing him, suspension without consultation, dismissal, and a failed employment tribunal appeal with the college argued reputational harm. So much for free speech and colleges exploring different ideas!
Aaron criticises “contradictory convictions” on Christian marriage, noting it effectively muzzles conservatives and those who hold traditional Gospel based views. He warns of a growing authoritarianism, and urges Christians to recover courageous, biblically grounded witness.
