In this episode of Solid Ground, Simon talks positive news coming out of Parliament with a Modern Slavery Bill passing First Reading. Modern slavery is where people are exploited and coerced – so think forced labour, human trafficking, and child labour. This Bill, jointly sponsored by National and Labour MPs, makes large New Zealand firms audit their supply chains to ensure they are not using such exploited labour.
Simon also celebrates the end of the Broadcasting Standard Authority (BSA), noting it was ideologically captured and biased. “Good riddance” sums up the discussion.
Turning to the United States, Simon highlights news that the Southern Poverty Law Centre (SPLC) has been accused of funding the very extremist groups it claims to be challenging. He also reviews footage of the latest presidential assassination attempt, questioning how the shooter got so close and the reactions of security.
